Hazel Green Academy began it's role in the History of Eastern Kentucky in the Year 1880.  In that year Senator W. O. Mize, Mr. J. Taylor Day, and Mr G. B. Swango received the Charter from the Ky State Legislature.  These gentlemen understood the need for quality education for quality of life.

In 1886 the operation of the Academy was turned over to the Disciples of Christ Denomination's  Christian Women's Board of Missions. (CWBM)  Hazel Green Academy operated as a Christian Boarding school until 1983.  For 60 of that 103 years HGA was the only College Prep School in Eastern Kentucky.  HGA became known as the "Mother Mountain School" because as many students left the academy they became teachers in the small schools throughout the region.

The original buildings for the Academy were located in Downtown Hazel Green.  A memorial marker still stands to commemorate this location.  In 1900 the Academy considered moving out of Hazel Green.  The townspeople, not wanting to lose their school, decided to purchase the hilltop home known to most as Hazel Green Academy in 1900.  They also constructed Pearre Hall to begin the new campus and on Thanksgiving day 1901 Pearre hall was dedicated.

HGA closed it's doors to students after the graduating class of 1983.
The grounds of HGA may no longer serve as a school but GOD still has a purpose for this property.  The History continues.
